Charitable Choice Funding
The attention paid to faith-based initiatives since the 2000 Presidential election has created a spirited discussion over the amount of government funding that should be made available to faith-based groups and what restrictions should be imposed.

The Power of One takes no official stance on the funding of faith-based organizations. Many groups have found the funding beneficial, especially when helping individuals gain independence from welfare payments or to counteract gang crime. These civic entrepreneurs have been able to work successfully with the Charitable Choice laws passed in 1996 and are willing to support future funding expansion with eased bureaucratic requirements.

Other civic entrepreneurs feel that general reliance upon government funding will require them to devote important resources to government paperwork. Another concern is that they will be restricted in their ability to spiritually counsel recipients. Still others are concerned about dependence upon a system that relies too heavily upon who resides in the White House or upon unpredictable decisions of government workers.

The Power of One is regularly tracking the status of Charitable Choice legislation. Interviews have been conducted with the staff of Senator Rick Santorum, an author of the legislation, and also with those civic entrepreneurs heading up organizations now receiving Charitable Choice funding.
